Zhū Dì 朱棣, the Yǒnglè 永樂 emperor (r. 1402–1424), temple name Chéngzǔ 成祖, fourth son of the Míng founder Zhū Yuánzhāng 朱元璋. Enfeoffed as Prince of Yān 燕王 at Běipíng (Beijing) in 1370, he seized the throne from his nephew the Jiànwén 建文 emperor after the Jìngnàn 靖難 war of 1399–1402. His reign was marked by the relocation of the capital to Beijing, the vast Yǒnglè dàdiǎn 永樂大典 compilation, the maritime expeditions of Zhèng Hé 鄭和, campaigns against the Mongols, and extensive Daoist and Buddhist patronage. In the Daoist sphere he sponsored the refurbishment of Wǔdāng shān 武當山 as the imperial cult site of Zhēnwǔ 真武, canonized the Xú brothers’ cult at the Língjì gōng 靈濟宮 near Fúzhōu in 1417, and personally prefaced several Dàozàng titles including Língbǎo tiānzūn shuō Hóng’ēn língjì zhēnjūn miàojīng KR5b0001. The great Zhèngtǒng dàozàng 正統道藏 project was not completed in his own lifetime but was set in motion by his patronage and eventually promulgated in 1445 under his great-grandson the Yīngzōng.
