Zhū Móuwěi 朱謀㙔

Yùyí 鬱儀. Seventh-generation descendant of Níng Xiànwáng 寧獻王 (Zhū Quán 朱權, 1378–1448, the seventeenth son of the Míng founder Zhū Yuánzhāng). Held the rank of zhōngwèi 中尉 and acted as administrator of the Shíchéngwángfǔ 石城王府 (the Stone-City Princely Establishment) — i.e. an active Míng imperial-clan member resident in his fief at Nánchāng 南昌 (Jiāngxī). The Míng shǐ Zhū wáng zhuàn records his life. CBDB index year 1574; date of death 1624.

A prolific bibliographer and kǎozhèng scholar within the Míng zōngshì 宗室 (imperial-clan) literary tradition. Author of:

  • Zhōuyì xiàng tōng 周易象通 (KR1a0099)
  • Shī gù 詩故 in 10 juǎn (KR1c0038)
  • Numerous studies on philology, geography, and natural history

The Sìkù editors observe that, freed by his princely status from the examination-route demands that bound ordinary scholars to the Wǔjīng dàquán commentaries, Zhū Móuwěi was free to do genuine textual research — “ensconced in his princely residence, not depending on advancement in the examination arena, he was able to research the textual remains and elucidate the ancient meaning.”
