Yuán-period orthographer, of Chángzhōu 長洲 (modern Suzhou), self-styled “Wújùn xuéshēng” (i.e., enrolled as dìzǐyuán / undergraduate-rank but not holding higher degree). His paternal uncle Lǐ Shìyīng 李世英 had compiled the now-lost Lèiyùn 類韻 in 30 juàn over ten years, taking sound as trunk and meaning as branch. Lǐ Wénzhòng’s Zìjiàn KR1j0039 in 5 juàn extends and refines that project, arranging by Lǐbù yùnlüè 206 rhyme-classes and supplying explicit biànzhèng (refutations) against errors in the Gānlù zìshū, Wǔjīng wénzì, Pèiguī, and other authorities. Generally rated by Qing reviewers as the most precise of Yuán-period orthographic dictionaries on faithfulness to the Shuōwén tradition. The book was nearly lost; revived through Zhū Yízūn’s tracing in early Kāngxī. Catalog meta gives “14th cent” without precise lifedates.
