Lǐ Guān 李觀 (766–794), zì Yuánbīn 元賓, was a Zhàozhōu Zànhuáng 趙州贊皇 native, nephew of the early-Táng gǔwén pioneer Lǐ Huá 李華. He took the jìnshì in Zhēnyuán 8 (792) — the Lónghǔ bǎng cohort of Hán Yù 韓愈 and Ōuyáng Zhān 歐陽詹 — and the bóxué hóngcí in Zhēnyuán 9 (793). Appointed Tàizǐ jiàoshūláng (Editor at the Heir-Apparent’s Library), he died at 29 in 794, mourned in epitaph by Hán Yù (the Lǐ Yuánbīn mùmíng in Chānglí jí).
Lǐ Guān’s prose is among the densest and most ornamentally archaic of the early-Yuánhé gǔwén practitioners — Lù Xīshēng’s 陸希聲 preface to his collection (composed 890) classifies him as having favored cí (diction) over zhì (substance) in the gǔwén program, in deliberate contrast with Hán Yù’s reverse priorities. The position became a critical commonplace in late-Táng and Sòng prose theory.
