Lín Yáosǒu 林堯叟 (zì Tángwēng 唐翁) was a late Sòng Zuǒzhuàn commentator. Lifedates not securely attested; not recorded in CBDB. Zhèng Yuè 鄭玥 (cited in Zhū Yízūn’s 朱彝尊 Jīngyì kǎo 經義考) records his zì as Tángwēng. He is the author of the Chūnqiū Zuǒzhuàn jù jiě 春秋左傳句解 in 40 juǎn, a phrase-by-phrase elementary commentary on the Zuǒzhuàn designed for student readers — the standard SòngYuánMíng “primer” on the Zuǒ. His annotations are largely paraphrastic and explanatory rather than philological, and the Sìkù compilers (in their notice on KR1e0092) judge them clearly inferior to the precise glosses of Dù Yù 杜預 (杜預).
In the late Míng (Chóngzhēn 崇禎 reign) the Hangzhōu publisher Wáng Dàokūn 王道焜 (王道焜) and his fellow-townsman Zhào Rúyuán 趙如源 (趙如源) produced a composite edition combining Dù Yù’s classical jí jiě with Lín’s vernacular paraphrase, the Zuǒzhuàn DùLín hé zhù 左傳杜林合注 (KR1e0092) in 50 juǎn. This composite circulated widely as a working student text throughout the late Míng and Qīng. Subsequent commercial reprints, however, dropped the editors’ names and converted the editors’ fánlì 凡例 into a preface ascribed to Lín himself, generating bibliographic confusion the Sìkù tíyào takes pains to correct.
