Contemporary historian of Chinese medicine and society (Hong Kong; formerly Academia Sinica); director of the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Hong Kong. Author of Leprosy in China: A History (Columbia, 2009), Charity and Moral Transformation: Benevolent Societies in Ming and Qing China (in Chinese, 1997; English, 2021), and “‘Variolation’ and Vaccination in Late Imperial China” (in History of Vaccine Development, Springer, 2011); the principal English-language authority on the social history of medicine in late-imperial China.
