JīnYuán transition scholar, historian, and senior Mongol-period administrator. Alternate name Zhīzhāng 知章; zì Huànrán 煥然; hào Zǐyáng 紫陽 / Zǐyánggé 紫陽閣. Native of Fèngtiān 奉天 in Qiánzhōu 乾州 (modern Shǎnxī). 1186 (Jīn Shìzōng Dàdìng 26) – 1255.
Career. Repeatedly successful in the Jīn-period autumn (xiāng) examination — four times selected — but unable to pass the palace (chūn) examination. After the Mongol conquest of Jīn (1234), recommended to the Mongol court by Yēlǜ Chǔcái 耶律楚材 (1190–1244, the great Mongol Khitan administrator); appointed Hénánlù zhēngshōu suìkè suǒ zhǎngguān (Hénán Circuit Tax-Collection Office Chief) concurrent Liánfǎngshǐ 廉訪使. Retired after ten years in office.
Scholarship. Notable as one of the principal northern Confucian scholars of the early Mongol administration. By his own Bìtóng jì (Record of the Arm-Boy) listed:
- Huánshān qiánjí 還山前集 (81 juàn)
- Huánshān hòují 還山後集 (20 juàn)
- Jìnjiàn 近鑑 (30 juàn)
- Hánzǐ 韓子 (10 juàn — on Hán Yù)
- Gàiyán 槩言 (25 piān)
- Yànzuǎn 硯纂 (8 juàn)
- Běijiànjì 北見記 (3 juàn)
- Zhèngtǒngjì 正統記 (60 juàn — historiographical work on dynastic-legitimacy)
The Yuánshǐ j. 153 cites only Huánshān jí 60 juàn; Yuán Hǎowèn’s Shéndào bēi cites 120 juàn. Of this enormous corpus, only fragments survive in the 2-juàn Huánshān yígǎo compiled by Sòng Tǐngzuǒ in Míng Jiājìng chū.
Notable contributions.
- The Biàn gùgōng jì 汴故宫記 (Record of the Old Palace at Biàn) is a major topographical-historical source on the Northern Sòng Imperial Palace at Kāifēng.
- His Letter to Yáo Gōngmào 與姚公茂書 discussing Zhū Xī’s Jiālǐ 家禮 spirit-tablet form is an early evidential treatise on Sòng-period ritual.
- His Dōngyóu jì 東遊記 (Record of the Eastern Journey) describes the Kǒnglíng (Confucius-Forest) at Qūfù.
- Notably, Yáng anticipated Zhū Xī’s Tōngjiàn gāngmù succession-judgment by independently rejecting Sīmǎ Guāng’s HànWèi zhèngrùn on Shǔ-Hàn-legitimist grounds — though he abandoned his own Hànshū revision project upon learning of Zhū Xī’s prior Gāngmù (recorded by Táo Zōngyí’s Chuògēng lù).
Within the Kanripo corpus. KR4d0452 Huánshān yígǎo 還山遺稿 (撰).
