Duàn Chéngshì 段成式 (字 Kēgǔ 柯古, 803 – 24 June 863), late-Tang official and literary scholar; born ca. 803, died on Xiántōng 4 / 6 = 863-06-24 (per Jiù Tángshū j. 167) at age ~61. Native of Zōupíng 鄒平 (Shāndōng).

His father Duàn Wénchāng 段文昌 was Tang chief minister, ennobled as Zōupíng jùngōng 鄒平郡公; his upbringing therefore in the senior official class. He himself rose through the secretarial-official career to Shàngshūláng 尚書郎, then was sent out as Jiāngzhōu cìshǐ 江州刺史; in late life he returned to the capital and held office as Tàicháng shǎoqīng 太常少卿.

His scholarly fame is principally for the 《酉陽雜俎》 Yǒuyáng zázǔ (the great late-Tang zhìguài / encyclopedic compendium), but his Buddhist-canonical works include:

  • 《寺塔記》 Sìtǎ jì (KR6r0128, T2093, 1 juan, 843–853) — first-person Cháng’ān monastic gazetteer of the immediate pre-Wǔ-zōng-persecution period.
  • 《金剛經鳩異》 Jīngāngjīng jiūyì (X1630) — a Diamond-sūtra miracle-tale collection.
  • Excerpts from the 酉陽雜俎 also incorporated into the Buddhist canon at B0090 (collected as Yǒuyáng zázǔ xuǎnjí).
