Hōjū 法住 (1723–1800) — Edo-period Japanese Shingi-Shingon 新義眞言宗 scholar-monk and the thirty-second-generation patriarch of the Yamato Hase-dera 大和長谷寺 (the head-temple of the Buzan-ha 豐山派 sub-school of Shingi-Shingon). Native of Iwakami-gun 石上郡, Yamato Province (modern Nara Prefecture). Style-name Chidō 智幢.

Took the tonsure at age 16 under Kaihan-shōnin 快範上人. Studied vinaya at Hōryū-ji 法隆寺; subsequently ascended Mount Buzan 豐山 (Hase-dera) and studied under Mutō 無等, Shinkai 親快, and other Shingi-Shingon scholastic masters. Travelled widely through the Japanese provinces gathering doctrine and lecturing.

Extensive scholarly output (over thirty fascicles in surviving works), including:

  • Dainichi-kyō gyokushin shō 大日經玉振鈔 (10 fasc.)
  • Setsu hachi-ten gi 攝八轉義 (5 fasc.)
  • Ho hachi-ten gi 補八囀義 (1 fasc.)
  • Ryaku hachi-ten gi 略八囀義 (1 fasc.)
  • Jikku-gi-ki 十句義記 (2 fasc.)

His principal work in the Taishō from the present period is:

  • Himitsu innen kangen sōjō gi 祕密因縁管絃相成義 (KR6t0247, T79n2541) — composed as recorder (記) under the signature Konrei sramana Hōjū 根嶺沙門法住 (“Sramana Hōjū of Negoro Peak”).
