Jìngduān 淨端
Northern-Sòng Yúnménzōng 雲門宗 Chán master with Tiāntái scholastic training, zì Míngbiǎo 明表; self-style Ānxián héshàng 安閑和尚; best known as Duān shī-zi 端師子 (“Lion-Duān”). 1031 – 11 January 1104 (lunar 崇寧 2.12.5), shìshòu 74, sēnglà 49. Native of Guīān 歸安 (Wúxīng), lay surname Qiū 丘.
Entered religion as a young child (age 6) at Wúshān Jiěkōngyuàn 吳山解空院 under Bǎoxiān 寶暹; took full precepts only at twenty-six. Studied the Tiāntái doctrinal system under Jìngjué Rényuè 淨覺仁岳 (992–1064); later went to Bǎojué Qíyuè 寶覺齊岳 (Yúnménzōng), where — on observing a street-festival lion-dance — he made a spontaneous leap and crouch into the lion-posture, earning Qíyuè’s confirmation and the cónglín nickname Duān shī-zi. Was invited by the chancellor Zhānggōng (probably Zhāng Dūn 章惇, 1035–1105) to teach at Wúshān; later moved to Húzhōu Xīyúsì 湖州西余寺. Lived four times in “small jiū” poor-monastery settings, with performance-costume chán pedagogy using coloured silks imitating lion-fur.
His yǔlù (KR6q0379; X73 n1449), re-edited a century later by his fǎsūn 師皎 Shījiǎo, preserves his jìsòng in the Hánshān 寒山 / Shídé 拾得 manner — dharma-doctrine by street-comic performance. A distinctive late-Northern-Sòng figure whose Chán / Tiāntái crossover and performance-orientation stand somewhat outside the main lineage-narratives of the period.
