Jìngfú 淨符 (Wèizhōng Jìngfú 位中淨符)

Qīng Cáodòng 曹洞-lineage Chán master. Hào Wèizhōng 位中 (“Within-Position”), Báiyán 白巖 (“White Cliff”), Ǒu dàorén 偶道人 (“Coincidental Daoist”). Native of Lúlíng 廬陵 (modern Jíān 吉安, Jiāngxī), secular surname Liú 劉. Lifedates unrecorded; active mid-late 17th century, with documented works dating from Kāngxī 6 (1667) through Kāngxī 11 (1672).

Dharma-disciple of Shíyǔ Míngfāng 石雨明方 (1593–1648). After failed visits to Biànshān Ruìbái Míngxuě 弁山瑞白明雪 he returned to his native place; an awakening was triggered by witnessing a bird drop a fallen pear, then confirmed by reading the Chuándēnglù passage on Jiǔfēng 九峰 (“How is the student-self?” / “What more does one ask?”). He went to Bǎoshòu 寶壽 to receive transmission from Shíyǔ Míngfāng. From Chóngzhēn 14 (1641) he held the abbacy of Báiyán Zūnshèngsì 白巖尊聖寺 in Qiántáng 錢塘 (Hángzhōu) for thirty years.

His Kanripo-canonical works include:

  • 《法門鋤宄》 Fǎmén chúguǐ (KR6r0113, X1604, 1 juan, 1667) — Cáo-dòng-side polemic against rival Chán lineage-claims and against the Línjì-side appropriation of Cáodòng transmission.
  • 《宗門拈古彙集》 Zōngmén niāngǔ huìjí (KR6q0245, X1296, 45 juan) — a massive Chán prose-commentary anthology gathering niāngǔ responses to classical cases from across the SòngYuánMíngQīng Chán tradition.
  • 《祖燈大統》 Zǔdēng dàtǒng (98 juan + 2-juan index, completed Kāngxī 11 = 1672) — comprehensive Chán transmission compilation.
  • 《人天眼目考》 Réntiān yǎnmù kǎo, 《頌古摘珠》 Sònggǔ zhāizhū (each 1 juan).
