Wúxué Zǔyuán 無學祖元
Southern Sòng Línjì-school Chan master who emigrated to Japan in 1279 at the invitation of Hōjō Tokimune 北條時宗 in the wake of the Mongol conquest of southern China. Founding abbot of Engaku-ji 圓覺寺 in Kamakura (1282), built to commemorate the Japanese repulse of the Mongol invasions. Founder of the Bukkō-ha 佛光派 lineage of Japanese Rinzai Zen, awarded the posthumous title Bukkō Kokushi 佛光國師. Major disciple: Kōhō Kennichi 高峰顯日, the teacher of Musō Soseki 夢窓疎石.
