Dúgū Jí 獨孤及 (725–777)

Zhìzhī 至之; posthumous shì Xiàn 憲 (whence Xiàngōng 憲公). Native of Hénán 河南 Luòyáng 洛陽 by family origin (the Dúgū clan, of Xiānbēi descent and prominent at the Northern Wèi and Sui-Táng courts). One of the four canonical Tiānbǎo / Dàlì-period fùgǔ prose stylists, alongside Xiāo Yǐngshì 蕭穎士, Lǐ Huá 李華, and Yuán Jié 元結 — collectively the bridge from the High-Tang court style to the YuánHé 元和 gǔwén movement of Hán Yù 韓愈 and Liǔ Zōngyuán 柳宗元.

Jìnshì of Tiānbǎo 13 (754). Successively Hùayīn 華陰 magistrate, zuǒ shíyí 左拾遺 in the Sùzōng and early Dàizōng courts, and (after the An Lùshān rebellion) Pòzhōu cìshǐ 鄱州刺史, Shūzhōu cìshǐ 舒州刺史, and finally Chángzhōu cìshǐ 常州刺史 (775–777) — the Pílíng 毗陵 of his collection’s title. Died in office at Chángzhōu in Dàlì 12 (777).

His extant collection — the Pílíng jí KR4c0034 in 20 juǎn — was compiled at his death by his disciple Liáng Sù 梁肅 梁肅 and is unusually well-preserved for a Tiānbǎo / Dàlì prose collection. His Lùn shǐ 論史 essays and prefaces (particularly to Huángfǔ Rǎn’s collection at KR4c0016) are the principal contemporary critical writings on early-medieval historiography and literary biography.

CBDB confirms 725–777 (cbdbId 32917). The catalog meta’s 715–767 figure is a 10-year displacement and is not followed in modern scholarship.
