Xuányī 玄一 (Korean Hyŏn’il, fl. late 7th–early 8th c.)
A Korean Silla 新羅 monk active in the late seventh and early eighth century, traditionally counted among the yúqié 瑜伽 / Faxiang 法相-school commentators of the Tang period and closely associated with the broader Silla exegetical tradition that included Wŏnhyo 元曉 元曉, Wŏnch’ŭk 圓測, and Kyŏnghŭng 憬興. Lifedates unrecorded. He is known almost exclusively from a small number of doctrinal commentaries that survive only as Dunhuang manuscript fragments or in incomplete Xùzàngjīng recensions: most importantly the Wúliángshòu jīng jì 無量壽經記 KR6p0002 (X22n0397), of which only the upper juǎn survives, and citations from a parallel Amituó jīng 阿彌陀經 commentary preserved in Japanese Pure Land scholastic literature. His writings are routinely cited by later Sino-Korean Pure Land authorities (Yuánxiào, Hwadōng, the Hossō transmissions in Japan) and his attribution as Shì Xuányī 釋玄一 (without surname) is preserved in the Dunhuang colophons.
He is sometimes confused with the Jingtu 淨土 thinker Xuányī of Heng-shan (恒山玄一, fl. mid-8th c.) cited in Japanese ōjō 往生 literature; the two should not be conflated. The DILA Authority id A001339 covers the Silla commentator.
