Buddhist monk of the Dàchánghéguó 大長和國 (902–928, the kingdom that succeeded Nánzhāo 南詔 in Yúnnán). Self-identified in the head-cartouche of KR6v0074 as “Yúnnán Dàchánghéguó nèi gōngfèng sēng, Chóngshèngsì zhǔ, yìxué jiàozhǔ, cì zǐ shāmén Xuánjiàn 雲南大長和國內供奉僧、崇聖寺主、義學教主、賜紫沙門玄鑒” — i.e., resident-imperial-attending monk; abbot of Chóngshèngsì 崇聖寺 (the principal royal monastery of Yúnnán, with the famous Three Pagodas at Dàlǐ); yìxué jiàozhǔ 義學教主 (master of doctrinal-studies); recipient of the imperial purple. Compiled the Hùguó sīnán chāo 護國司南抄 KR6v0074, a sub-commentary on Liángbēn 良賁’s Rénwáng hùguó bōrě bōluómìduō jīng shū 仁王護國般若波羅蜜多經疏 (T33n1709), in Ānguó 安國 6 (= 908 CE). Hóu Chōng’s careful re-examination of the colophon and the use of the title yìxué jiàozhǔ (rather than the previously misread mìxué jiàozhǔ 密學教主) places Xuánjiàn in the yìxué (doctrinal-exegetical) rather than the esoteric tradition of Yúnnán Buddhism — a correction with significant implications for the history of Nánzhāo / Dàchánghé Buddhism.
