Wáng Tōng 王通 (584–617), Zhòngyān 仲淹, posthumously named WénZhōngzǐ 文中子 by his disciples, was a late-Suí classicist of Lóngmén 龍門 in Héjīn 河津 (modern Shānxī). He is the grandfather of the early-Táng poet Wáng Bó 王勃 (650–676). The contemporary biographical record is partial: Yáng Jiǒng 楊炯 (650–693) in his preface to the Wáng Bó jí refers to Wáng Tōng’s holding the xiùcái in the Suí, his serving as Recorder of the Shǔjùn 蜀郡 prefecture (蜀郡司戶書佐) and as Lecturer to the King of Shǔ (蜀王侍讀), and his withdrawal at the end of Dàyè 大業 to lecture at Lóngmén; Dù Mù’s 杜牧 Fánchuān jí preface by Péi Yánhàn 裴延翰 quotes him on the Wángdào. The first sentence of his biography in the Suí shū is missing — there is in fact no proper Suí shū biography of him. The Zhōng shuō 中說 attributed to him (KR3a0014) was compiled by his sons Wáng Fújiào 王福郊 and Wáng Fúzhì 王福畤 from his sayings and elaborations, and the SKQS tíyào shows the work to be heavily padded with later inventions. He is nonetheless a real figure, of jīngshù 經術 stature in the Wǔdé period. CBDB id 11965 gives 583–616 (i.e. one year earlier on each side); other sources (catalog meta) give 584–618; the conventional working bracket is 584–617.
