Early-Qīng 清 grand secretary (dàxuéshì 大學士) and senior imperial-commission director, native of Huátíng 華亭 in Sōngjiāng 松江 (modern Shànghǎi). Zì Zǐqí 子琪; hào Màohú 瑁湖; posthumously canonized Wéngōng 文恭. Lifedates 1642–1725 are firm (CBDB id 57204).
Jìnshì of Kāngxī 15 / 1676. Held a sequence of high Hànlín and grand-secretarial appointments under both Kāngxī and Yōngzhèng. By the late Kāngxī reign he was Wǔyīngdiàn dàxuéshì 武英殿大學士, and was repeatedly appointed zǒng cái 總裁 (“Director-General”) of major imperial-commission compilation projects, including the Quán Táng shī 全唐詩 (under Cáo Yín 曹寅 as compiler), the Pèiwén yùn fǔ 佩文韻府, and most notably the Qīndìng Shū jīng zhuàn shuō huì zuǎn 欽定書經傳說彙纂 (KR1b0046) — the late-Kāngxī / Yōngzhèng-completed imperial standard Shàngshū commentary that superseded the Yǒnglè-era Shū jīng dàquán (KR1b0037) and remained the yùdìng imperial standard for the rest of the Qīng. The Huì zuǎn was begun in late Kāngxī and completed in Yōngzhèng 8 / 1730, after Wáng Xūlíng’s death; he is named on the recension as the principal compiler.
