Zhēn Déxiù 真德秀 (1178–1235), zì Jǐngyuán 景元 (later Xīyuán 希元), hào Xīshān 西山, posthumous title Wénzhōng 文忠, of Pǔchéng 浦城 in Jiànníng 建寧 (modern Fújiàn). Qìngyuán 5 (1199) jìnshì; Bóxué hóngcí 博學鴻詞 1205. The leading Southern-Sòng Dàoxué statesman of the post-Zhū-Xī generation. After the Qìngyuán dǎngjìn 慶元黨禁 (False-Learning Proscription, 1196–1202) lifted, he served in a sequence of increasingly senior posts, rising to Cānzhī zhèngshì 參知政事 (Vice Grand Councillor) and Zīzhèng diàn dàxuéshì 資政殿大學士 under Lǐzōng. Through his Dàxué yǎnyì 大學衍義 (presented to the throne 1229) — a vast topical compendium of Confucian political-and-ethical doctrine grounded in the Dàxué — he made the post-Zhū-Xī Dàoxué programme operative as imperial-pedagogical doctrine. The Sòngshǐ (juan 437) gives him a substantial biography in the Rúlín zhuàn.
