Yēlǜ Chún 耶律純

Allegedly a Liáo-dynasty (Khitan) Hànlín scholar; the work KR3g0039 Xīngmìng zǒngkuò 星命總括 is attributed to him with a self-preface dated Tǒnghé 2 (984) of the Liáo Shèngzōng era. However, the Sìkù 提要 of KR3g0039 identifies multiple historical inconsistencies in this attribution:

(a) The Liáo Běnjì records no Korean diplomatic mission for Tǒnghé 2 (the year claimed by the preface for Yēlǜ Chún’s mission to Goryeo Korea, where he allegedly received the xīngmìng technique from a Korean guóshī).

(b) The Liáo Wàijì records a Tǒnghé 3 (985) eastern-expedition against Goryeo, but explicitly states that the campaign was abandoned due to the Liáo’s flooded territory — “also no record of an envoy-mission to discuss border-territory”.

(c) Throughout the Liáo dynasty, “nobility-and-office did not extend beyond the Yēlǜshì and Xiāoshì two clans”, making any nominal Yēlǜ-clan member possible — but checking all Lièzhuàn (biographies), there is no Yēlǜ Chún recorded.

The 提要 concludes: “Probably this also issues from reliance-and-attribution” — i.e., the Yēlǜ Chún attribution is pseudepigraphic. The actual author is unknown. The work’s substantive content is genuine, but the attribution to the Liáo period is a literary device.
