Niè Chóngyì 聶崇義 (fl. mid-10th c.), native of Luòyáng 洛陽 (Hénán). Active across the HòuHàn, HòuZhōu, and early-Sòng dynasties. Under the HòuZhōu Shìzōng (Xiǎndé period, 954–960) he served as Guózǐ jiān sīyè 國子監司業 (Director of Studies at the Imperial Academy) and was charged by imperial commission with revising the imperial jiāomiào jìyù (suburban-and-temple ritual jade) — for which task he compiled the Sānlǐ tú jízhù 三禮圖集注 KR1d0078 in 20 juan, drawing on six earlier Sānlǐ tú lines (including the lost Sānlǐ tú attributed to Zhèng Xuán, Ruǎn Chén, Xiàhóu Fúlǎng, Zhāng Yì, Liáng Zhèng, and the SuíKāihuáng imperial-commission). The work was completed and presented to the early-Sòng Tàizǔ (the Sòng huìyào and Sòng shǐ rúlín zhuàn record the imperial promulgation order). The standard pre-modern reference for ritual-implement and ceremonial-layout illustration. The variant orthography of his given name (從義 / 崇義) appears in the Qiánlóng yùzhì inscription on the Sòng imprint and in some bibliographic catalogues. CBDB id 52656; precise dates not preserved.
