Zìjué 自覺

Northern-Sòng Cáodòng 曹洞 Chán master, hào Lùmén 鹿門 (also styled Huìdìng 慧定 and Jìngyīn Jué 淨因覺 after his abbacies); posthumous title Dìnghuì chánshī 定慧禪師. Dharma-heir of Fúróng Dàokǎi 芙蓉道楷 (1043–1118), thus grand-disciple (孫) of 義青 Tóuzǐ Yìqīng (1032–1083). Native of Qīngzhōu 青州, lay surname Wáng 王; died on the 16th of the 2nd month of Zhènghé 7 (27 March 1117).

Entered orders under Dàokǎi during the Shàoshèng era (1094–1098) and received his dharma-transmission. Abbacy sequence: Nányángfǔ Dàchéngshān Pǔyánsì 普嚴寺 (from Chóngníng 3 / 1104), Shàngdū Zuǒjiē Shífāng Jìngyīn chányuàn 上都左街十方淨因禪院 (from Dàguān 1 / 1107, in the Northern-Sòng capital Biànjīng), and Lùménshān 鹿門山 (from Zhènghé 1 / 1111). Buried in a stupa at Lùménshān.

His principal editorial achievement was the chóngbiān 重編 of 義青 Yìqīng’s yǔlù (KR6q0356), carried out during his Jìngyīn abbacy — the closing of which identifies “原本全稿者其孫淨因覺公之所編集也.” Through him, the main-line Cáodòng recension of Yìqīng’s teaching was fixed at the imperial capital for subsequent transmission. Named dharma-heirs include Huìlán 慧蘭 and Pǔzhào Yībiàn 普照一辦 (Xībiàn 希辨); a supplementary note in Wǔdēng huìyuán xùlüè juan 1 re-identifies him as a student of Tiāntóng Rújìng, which appears to conflate two different figures of the same name.
