Fàn Wàng 范望

Western Jìn 西晉 commentator on Yáng Xióng’s KR3g0001 Tàixuán jīng. Birth and death years not securely recorded; flourished in the late 3rd / early 4th century. The Sìkù 提要 of KR3g0001 notes that Fàn Wàng’s commentary postdates Sòng Zhōng 宋衷 (Eastern Hàn / early Wèi) and Lù Jì 陸績 (Three Kingdoms Wú, 187–219), whose earlier Tàixuán commentaries Fàn Wàng synthesized. The Tang Yìwén zhì attributes to Fàn Wàng the consolidating-and-restructuring of the Tàixuán’s component sections — particularly the integration of the Xuáncè 玄測 section that earlier recensions had positioned differently.

Fàn Wàng’s commentary became the standard transmitted recension of the Tàixuán jīng; subsequent commentators (Wáng Yá 王涯’s Shuōxuán 說玄, Sīmǎ Guāng 司馬光’s Tàixuán jízhù 太玄集注, Yè Zǐqí 葉子奇’s KR3g0002 Tàixuán běnzhǐ 太玄本旨, and others) all build on Fàn Wàng’s text. Through this commentarial tradition, Yáng Xióng’s Tàixuán — modeled on the Yìjīng but using a 9-fold rather than 8-fold cosmological structure — entered the standard Chinese philosophical-cosmological canon.
