Chǔ Cángyán 褚藏言 (fl. mid-9th c.)

A late-Táng scholar from the West-river (Xījiāng 西江) region (style “Xījiāng yìmín” 西江逸民, “Recluse of the Western River”). He is the compiler of the Dòu shì liánzhū jí 竇氏聯珠集 KR4h0018 — a joint anthology of the Wǔ Dòu (five Dòu brothers) of Fúfēng — for which he composed the principal preface and the individual zhuàn attached to each brother. The preface is dated to the years immediately after Dòu Cháng’s death (825); Cángyán was therefore active in the 820s and 830s. No further biographical detail is recoverable.
