Guān-wú-wèi zūn-zhě 觀無畏尊者 (“The Venerable Who Looks-Without-Fear”; Skt. uncertain, possibly Avalokita-vrata or Avalokita-abhaya) is the attributed compiler of the Zhū-fǎ jí-yào jīng 諸法集要經 (KR6i0422 / T728), translated into Chinese by 日稱 (Rì-chēng) and others at the Northern Sòng Yìjīng-yuàn 譯經院 in the mid-eleventh century. The 10-fascicle text is one of the principal late Sòng-period Mahāyāna doctrinal anthologies. Lifedates, Indian biographical details, and the precise Sanskrit identification of the name 觀無畏 are not preserved in available sources. The honorific 尊者 (zūn-zhě, “Venerable”) indicates sthavira / elder status in the Indian Buddhist tradition. The text’s compendium-anthology character (jí-yào = “compendium of essentials”) is consistent with the late Pāla-period scholastic production from which the Sòng bureau’s source manuscripts came.
