Zhào Jí 趙佶 (1082–1135), posthumously Sòng Huīzōng 宋徽宗, eighth emperor of the Sòng (r. 1100–1126). Born the eleventh son of Shénzōng, ascended on the death of his elder half-brother Zhézōng. The most artistically and intellectually accomplished of all Sòng emperors: painter (founder of the Xuānhé 宣和 court painting style and codifier of court painting standards), calligrapher (inventor of the Shòujīn 瘦金 “slender gold” script), connoisseur (compiler of the Xuānhé huàpǔ 宣和畫譜 and Xuānhé shūpǔ 宣和書譜), poet, and Daoist religious patron (self-titled Dàojūn huángdì 道君皇帝 “Daoist-Lord Emperor”). His political reign coincided with the rise of the Xīnfǎ 新法 faction under Cài Jīng 蔡京, leading to massive court patronage and corresponding fiscal crisis, and ended catastrophically with the 1125–1126 Jurchen invasion. Captured at the Jìngkāng fall of Kāifēng (1126–1127) and exiled to the far north, he died in captivity in 1135.

Medically, Huīzōng was the most personally engaged of Chinese imperial patrons. He authored the Shèngjì jīng 聖濟經 (42 chapters of theoretical medicine, attached as preface to the Shèngjì zǒnglù) and personally commissioned the Shèngjì zǒnglù 聖濟總錄 in 200 juǎn — the largest single Chinese medical compilation (KR3ed012). He established formal Yīxué 醫學 (medical academies) at the prefectural level and patronised the Daoist physiological-medical synthesis. He was also a connoisseur of bencao, materia medica, and cùjì 蹴鞠 (a traditional ball-game). CBDB id 6313 (1082–1135). Sòngshǐ j. 19–22.
