Zhào Gōngyù 趙公豫 (1135–1212)
Zì Zhòngqiān 仲謙 (so the Sìkù tíyào; the běnzhuàn preserved at the front of his collection KR4d0221 gives Zhòngmóu 仲謀 — both forms current). Native of Chángshú 常熟 (modern Jiāngsū), but originally a member of the Sòng imperial-clan (zōngshì) who, after the 1127 southern crossing, moved south to Chángshú; the precise lineage is no longer determinable, since the Sòngshǐ imperial-clan genealogy does not record the Gōng generation-character among the standard lines. Lifedates 1135–1212 per CBDB id 14746 and the catalog meta. (The běnzhuàn preserved with the collection states he died at age 64, which would imply 1135–1198 and an inner inconsistency in the bibliographic record; the catalog’s 1212 figure is retained.)
Jìnshì in the Shàoxīng era. Career: prefect of Zhēnzhōu 真州 (modern Yízhēng, Jiāngsū); rose by stages to Bǎomógé dàizhì and retired. His administrative reputation rested on his liánglì (good administrator) maxim, and the popular farewell of juéjiāng pānyuán (carrying wine-flagons and clinging to the carriage-shafts) on his leaving office. Mǎ Hézhī’s epitaph for him is “Qīngxiǎn” (Pure-and-Manifest, 清顯).
His youthful associations included Pútián’s Chén Yuánjǔ, Jīnhuá’s Chén Tiānyǔ, Huátíng’s Xǔ Shàngdá, Lánqī’s Fàn Jùn 范浚, and Xīnhuì’s Mǎ Gěngchén — a substantial Southern-Sòng literary network of mid-rank scholars.
Surviving in Kanripo:
- KR4d0221 Yàntáng shīgǎo (1 juǎn, WYG; the surviving fragment of an originally 16-juǎn Yàntáng lèigǎo, the prose having been lost when the prefect Jiǎng Yōng reduced the original collection to a poetry-only abridgement).
