Báshéluó pútí 跋折羅菩提
Tang-period South-Indian trepiṭaka and Esoteric Buddhist patriarch; the first patriarch of the Tang Vajradhātu (Jīn-gāng-jiè) lineage in China, conventionally Sinified as Jīn-gāng-zhì 金剛智 (“Vajrajñāna” — though the original Sanskrit is in fact Vajrabodhi, “vajra-awakening”). 671–741 CE. Native of Mahalaka (central or southern India); arrived in China by sea via Śrī Vijaya in Kāiyuán 7 = 719. Master of Bù-kōng 不空 (Amoghavajra), who succeeded him as the second Vajradhātu patriarch; through Vajrabodhi → Amoghavajra → Huì-guǒ → Kūkai, the lineage transmitted to Heian Japan and founded the Shingon 真言宗 school.
The catalog meta of KR6j0746 uses the Sanskrit-transliterated form 跋折羅菩提 rather than the Sinified form 金剛智, which is unusual. His authentic compositions and translations include the Jīngāngdǐng yúqié zhōng lüèchū niànsòng jīng 金剛頂瑜伽中略出念誦經 (T866) and the present Liánhuábù duōlìxīn púsà niànsòng fǎ 蓮華部多利心菩薩念誦法 (KR6j0746). The South-Indian provenance and the Lotus-Family (Padma-kula) framework of the present work are entirely consistent with Vajrabodhi’s broader textual corpus.
