The dominant court landscape painter of the mid- to late-Northern Sòng; zì Chúnfū 淳夫, a man of Wēnxiàn 溫縣 in Hénán. Lifedates traditionally given as c. 1020 – c. 1090. Began as a dàoshì of the Jīngmíng lineage; entered the Túhuàyuàn 圖畫院 under Rénzōng 仁宗 in the 1060s and rose to Hànlín dàizhào zhícháng 翰林待詔直長, the highest painting rank in the imperial academy. Painter of choice to Emperor Shénzōng 神宗 (r. 1067–1085); credited with the wall paintings of the Yǎnhéguàn 延和觀, the Zhèngyángmén 正陽門, the Jǐngwéiguāng 景靈宮 and other major Northern Sòng imperial sites — almost none of which survive. His principal extant works include Zǎochūn tú 早春圖 (Zǎochūn, 1072, Národní palace, Taipei) and Línquán tú 林泉圖. His landscape doctrine — preserved orally and edited by his son 郭思 (Guō Sī) as the KR3h0018 Línquán gāozhì jí — is the founding theoretical document of the LǐGuō 李郭 landscape tradition; its Sānyuǎn 三遠 compositional formula (high / deep / level distance) is among the most influential single doctrines in Chinese art theory. Posthumously bestowed Zhèngyì dàifū 正議大夫.
