Qián Ruòshuǐ 錢若水 (960–1003), zì Dànchéng 澹成 and later Zhǎngqīng 長卿, was a leading Northern Sòng official-historian from Hénánfǔ 河南府 (Luòyáng). He passed the jìnshì in Yōngxī 雍熙 2 (985) and rose rapidly under the Tàizōng 太宗 emperor (Zhào Jiōng 趙炅). He served as Hànlín xuéshì 翰林學士, Zhī zhìgào 知制誥, Tóngzhī yuànmìyuàn shì 同知院密院事, and finally as Hùbù shìláng 戶部侍郎 and Imperial Diary supervisor. His renown rests on his appointment in Xiánpíng 咸平 1 (998) by Zhēnzōng 真宗 to direct the compilation of the Tàizōng huángdì shílù 太宗皇帝實錄, the official Veritable Records of the late Tàizōng’s reign, in 80 juàn; the work was completed in Xiánpíng 5 (1002). Of that great compilation only a 20-juàn fragment now survives, transmitted in the Sìbù cóngkān and cataloged in the Kanripo as KR2f0003 Tàizōng huángdì shílù cán 太宗皇帝實錄殘. Qián also took part in the editing of the Tàizǔ huángdì shílù and various other state-historical projects of the late Tàizōng and early Zhēnzōng courts. He died young, aged 44, in Xiánpíng 6 (1003); his collected works are largely lost. Sòng shǐ 宋史 has his biography in juàn 266.
