Chōe 長惠, Tendai shōmyō teacher of the Ōhara Raigō-in liturgical-music lineage in the Kamakura / Nanboku-chō period. Precise lifedates are not securely attested in modern reference works; he is conventionally dated c. 1300–1400 on the basis of doctrinal vocabulary and references in his Gyo-san shi-shō KR6t0424. As a working shōmyō performer and teacher he preserved important oral-tradition performance material in his “personal anthology” — texts that would otherwise have been transmitted only orally.
