Lǘqiū Fāngyuǎn 閭丘方遠 (hào Xuándòng xiānshēng 玄洞先生; d. 902) was a late-Táng Shàngqīng 上清 master of Sōushān 嵩山 and then of Tiānzhù guàn 天柱觀 on Mount Tiānzhù (Yúhángzhōu 餘杭州 / modern Zhèjiāng). A polymath catalogue-maker, commentator, and ritual authority, he produced among other works:
- The Tiānzhù guàn jì 天柱觀記 of 900, cited in DZ 782 Dàdì dòngtiān jì 3.3b.
- The Tàishàng dòngxuán língbǎo dàgāng chāo 太上洞玄靈寶大綱鈔 KR5b0077 (DZ 393), an outline of the Língbǎo tradition organised by the five-kalpa / five-element correspondence.
- A commentary on the Nánhuá zhēnjīng 南華真經 (partly preserved) and other Shàngqīng exegetical materials.
His biography is preserved in DZ 296 Lìshì zhēnxiān tǐdào tōngjiàn 歷世真仙體道通鑑 (Xù xiān zhuàn 續仙傳 tradition) 3.4a–6a, which records his audiences at the court of Qián Liú 錢鏐 of Wúyuè 吳越. CBDB has an entry (id 450098) but gives no lifedates; the death date 902 is universally accepted in the modern scholarship following DZ 296. The name is frequently miscopied as 方達 — e.g. in the source file of DZ 393 itself — and this error should be watched for.
