The Sìkù tíyào of KR4d0186 notes Ruǎn’s poetry is heavily flavored with Chán (Zen) — typical of the Sòng period — but Ruǎn’s poetic learning is sufficient that he avoids the suānfǔ (sour-pedantic) mode. The Chēnjiāng bǎiyǒng preface (dated Xuānhé jiǎchén 1124, 2nd month Zhōnghé day, by 舒城阮閱序) explains the work as filling-in poetic coverage of Chēnzhōu sites that earlier Tang poets (Dù Fǔ, Hán Yù, Liǔ Zōngyuán, Shěn Quánqí, Dài Shūlún) had only sparsely-treated.
