Chén Hòuyào 陳厚耀 (1648–1722), zì Sìyuán 泗源, hào Shǔfēng 曙峰, native of Tàizhōu 泰州 (Yángzhōu 揚州 prefecture, Jiāngsū). Kāngxī xīnsì (1701) jìnshì. He served in the Hànlín Academy as Examination Editor and was specially summoned to the Inner Court for his expertise in mathematical astronomy and calendrical computation; on imperial commission he collaborated on the Lǜ lì yuān yuán 律歷淵源 mathematical-astronomical compendium. As an early-Qing astronomer-historian he produced a series of pivotal Chūnqiū reference works: Chūnqiū shìzú pǔ 春秋世族譜 (KR1e0111) — a genealogical reconstruction of the Zhōu kingdom and feudal states; Chūnqiū cháng lì 春秋長歷 (KR1e0112) — a complete reconstruction of the lunisolar calendar across 春秋’s 242 years using techniques from Yī Xíng 一行 and Guō Shǒujìng 郭守敬; and a now-lost Zhànguó cè biān nián 戰國策編年. He is one of the most consequential evidential scholars of the Kāngxī generation and a direct forerunner of Wáng Yīnglín-style historical philology in Chūnqiū studies.
