Chén Lǚ 陳旅 (1287–1342), zì Zhòngzhòng 眾仲, native of Pútián 莆田 (Fújiàn). Recommended as Mǐnhǎi rúxuéguān. Zhōngchéng Mǎ Zǔcháng 馬祖常 recognized his talent and took him to the capital; Yú Jí also knew him. Píngzhāng shì Zhào Shìyán 趙世延 brought him into the Guózǐ zhùjiào; after passing two terms, he went out as Zhèjiāng rúxué tíjǔ, then was called back as yìngfèng Hànlín wénzì; in Zhìyuán 1 (1335) promoted to Guózǐjiān chéng; two years later died in office. Yuánshǐ rúxué zhuàn contains his biography. Yú Jí saw his work and said “wǒ lǎo jiāng xiū fù zǐ sī wén” — “I’m old and about to retire; I leave this prose to you.” Edited by his son Yù 籲; first preface 1349, second 1351. Sū Tiānjué’s Yuán wénlèi xulus assigned xù to no one else; reserved it for Chén Lǚ — knowing his prose worthy of chuánxìn.
