Chén Shēn 陳深 (1260–1344, per CBDB person 33334; SKQS tíyào infers a Kāiqìng / Jǐngdìng (1259–1264) birth from the death-date of his son Chén Zhí 陳植), Zǐwēi 子微, of Píngjiāng 平江 (Sūzhōu 蘇州). His studio was named Qīngquán zhāi 清全齋, by which hào he is also known. He was about twenty when Sòng fell in 1279; thereafter he committed himself to classical scholarship and refused to take Yuán office. In the Tiānlì era (1328–1330), when officials of the Kuízhānggé 奎章閣 recommended him on the basis of his calligraphy, he hid and would not come out. The SKQS notes the Wú jùn zhì 吳郡志 entry by Lú Tài 盧態 and the QiáoWú jí 僑吳集 of Zhèng Yuányòu 鄭元祐 as the principal early biographical sources. Beyond the Dú Chūnqiū biān 讀春秋編 KR1e0055, Chén composed the now-lost Dú Yì biān 讀易編 and Dú Shī biān 讀詩編. His scholarship is described by the SKQS as “dūshí jūnzǐ” 篤實君子 — substantial and not given to flashy iconoclasm. Note that there are several CBDB persons named Chén Shēn; this is the late-Sòng / early-Yuán Píngjiāng scholar (CBDB 33334), distinct from the Sòng Pújiāng Yuèquán shūyuàn shānzhǎng of 1280 (CBDB 10544) and others.
