Chén Bǎoshàn 陳葆善 (zì Lìān 慄盦 / 慄庵; also Liáofǔ 漻甫, late 19th c. – early 20th c.), late-Qīng / early-Republican physician of Wēnzhōu (Ōujùn 甌郡), Zhèjiāng. CBDB id 672132 (no dates in the CBDB row; active 1880s–1910s on internal preface evidence). The first graduating physician of the Lǐjīng yīyuàn 利濟醫院 (a foundational late-Qīng modern Chinese-medicine school established in 1885 in Wēnzhōu by his teacher 陳虯 Chén Qiú, 1851–1903) and a leading figure in the late-Qīng / early-Republican reform of throat-medicine.
Chén Bǎoshàn is the author of Báihóu tiáobiàn 白喉條辨 (KR3em020), the foundational late-Qīng monograph on diphtheria in fifteen “discriminations” modelled on Wú Jūtōng’s Wēnbìng tiáobiàn. The work relocates the diagnosis of báihóu 白喉 from the Shǎoyīn kidney channel (where 鄭宏綱 Zhèng Méijiàn had placed it in KR3em017 Chónglóu yùyuè) to the Hand-Tài-yīn lung channel under the zàohuǒ 燥火 dryness-fire rubric, integrating diphtheria into the wēnbìng heat-and-dryness epidemic-disease framework. The book was composed 1893–1897 in the wake of the author’s own family tragedy (he and his three children all contracted diphtheria in spring 1893; the youngest son died under the then-orthodox nourish-yīn protocol), serially published in 1898 in the Lǐjīng xuétáng yībào 利濟學堂醫報 with editorial reorganisation by his fellow-student Hú Xīn 胡鑫 (son-in-law of Chén Qiú), and supplemented by his own 1909 Bǔyì 補義 addressing the avoid-resolving-the-exterior controversy. His signature emergency formula is the Sānqì jiànglóng dān 三炁降龍丹 for late-stage diphtheria with phlegm-and-wheeze terminal symptoms in which the lung’s yīn has been exhausted to the point of lóngléi surging.
