Mid-Northern-Sòng Yánguān and Confucian scholar, zì Shùgǔ 述古, hào Gǔlíng xiānshēng 古靈先生 (after his natal village Gǔlíng in Hóuguān 侯官 / Fúzhōu). Jìnshì of Qìnglì 2 / 1042 (the same cohort as Wáng Ānshí, Sū Sòng 蘇頌, Hán Jiàng 韓絳). Held a long sequence of provincial zhīzhōu posts; Tìxíngfǎ in LiǎngZhè; Tàicháng shǎoqīng, Yòusī lángzhōng, Shūmì zhí xuéshì. One of the Hǎishàng sì xiānshēng 海上四先生 (Four Worthies of Fújiàn learning, with Zhōu Xīmèng 周希孟, Chén Liè 陳烈, Zhèng Mù 鄭穆). Principal Yánguān opponent of Wáng Ānshí’s Xīníng New Policies, 1069–1071. Famous for the Jīngyán talent-list of 33 men submitted to Shénzōng (preserved in his collection) — including Sīmǎ Guāng 司馬光, Sū Shì 蘇軾, Chéng Hào 程顥, Zhāng Zài 張載 and other future luminaries.
