Chén Xuǎn 陳選 (1429–1486), Shìxián 士賢, posthumously Gōngquè 恭慤 (Reverent and Sincere — Wǔ-zōng-period grant), was a major early-Míng Lǐxué official. Native of Línhǎi 臨海 (Táizhōu 台州, Zhèjiāng). Jìnshì of Tiānshùn gēngchén (1460); held office to Guǎngdōng bùzhèngshǐ 廣東布政使 (Provincial Administration Commissioner of Guǎngdōng), promoted posthumously to Guānglùsì qīng 光祿寺卿. As Yùshǐ he supported Luó Lún 羅倫 and impeached Ní Qiān 倪謙, Qián Pǔ 錢溥, Mǎ Áng 馬昂, and the eunuch Wāng Zhí 汪直 — earning a reputation for upright remonstrance. As Guǎngdōng bùzhèngshǐ, he opposed the eunuch faction’s interference in the shìbó 市舶 (foreign trade) administration; was arrested and died in prison. His major scholarly work is the Xiǎoxué jízhù 小學集註 — a commentary on Zhū Xī’s Xiǎo xué — adopted under Yōngzhèng 5 (1727) as the imperial standard Xiǎo xué commentary, and reproduced in the SKQS as KR3a0046 under the title Yùdìng Xiǎoxué jízhù 御定小學集註. Biography: Míng shǐ j. 161. CBDB id 67109, dates 1429–1486.
