Xiàng Zhōng 項忠
Mid-Míng general (1421–1502); posthumous title Xiāngyì 襄毅, hence styled Xiāngyì gōng 襄毅公. Best known for surviving the Tǔmù 土木 incident of 1449 (the Mongol capture of the Zhèngtǒng emperor). Lifelong Cuṇḍā dhāraṇī devotee from youth, who attributed his survival of that incident to the protection of the Cuṇḍā mantra.
Mentioned in his descendant 項謙 Xiàng Qiān’s 1652 preface to the Zhǔntí fénxiū xīdì chànhuǐ xuánwén (KR6j0760) as the Xiàng-family ancestor who established the Cuṇḍā devotional tradition transmitted through the family.
