Gù Qǐyuán 顧起元 (1565–1628), zì Tàichū 太初, hào Dùnyuán jūshì 遯園居士, posthumous title Wénzhuāng 文莊, native of Jiāngníng 江寧 (Nánjīng). Late-Míng Wànlì wùxū (1598) jìnshì. He served at the Hànlín yuàn and rose through the Lìbù to Lìbù yòu shìláng (Vice-Minister of Personnel). He withdrew from court in the late Wànlì / early Tiānqǐ period, retiring to his Dùnyuán (Garden of Withdrawal) at Nánjīng. He was one of the most distinguished late-Míng kǎojù scholars and a leading figure of the Nánjīng literary world. His principal works are: the Kèzuò zhuìyǔ 客座贅語 (a bǐjì on late-Míng Nánjīng intellectual and social life, including the first Chinese discussion of European Jesuit science at Nánjīng); the Jīnlíng gǔjīn túkǎo 金陵古今圖考 (historical-geographical study of Nánjīng); the Shuōlüè 說畧 (KR3k0048) in 30 juan; and the literary collection Lǎnzhēn cǎotáng jí 懶真草堂集.
