Mǎ Chéngyuán 馬承源
Chinese archaeologist and museum administrator (1928–2004), native of Ningbo 寧波, Zhejiang. Long-serving director of the Shanghai Museum 上海博物館, where he built the institution into a world-class centre for Chinese archaeology and art history, particularly renowned for its collection of ancient bronzes. He was responsible for the museum’s 1994 purchase of 1,437 Warring States Chu bamboo slips from a Hong Kong dealer — what became known as the Shanghai Museum Warring States Chu bamboo texts (上博楚竹書 Shàngbó Chǔ Zhúshū) — and served as chief editor of the nine-volume publication series Shànghǎi Bówùguǎn Cáng Zhànguó Chǔ Zhúshū 上海博物館藏戰國楚竹書 (Shanghai guji, 2001–2012), which remained unfinished at his death and was completed posthumously.
His earlier work includes major contributions to the study of Shang and Zhou bronze inscriptions, including the multivolume Shāng Zhōu qīngtóngqì míngwén xuǎn 商周青銅器銘文選 (Selected Bronze Inscriptions from Shang and Zhou, 4 vols., Wenwu, 1986–1991), compiled with colleagues.
