Yuán-period 元 Daoist priest and Sòng-loyalist yímín poet. Zì Zhìdào 志道; hào Xūzhōng 虛中 (“Empty-and-Composed”). Native of Qiántáng 錢塘 (Hángzhōu, modern Zhèjiāng). CBDB 28345 records b. 1254; death-date uncertain.
Religious affiliation. Took Daoist robes and resided at the West Lake as a retiring priest. Active in the early-Yuán Xuánjiào / Quánzhēn imperial-Daoist literary circle; participated in the Dàdé xīnchǒu (1301) imperial Daoist nèijiào 內醮 hosted at Yān (Beijing) by the Forty-Second-Generation Tiānshī Zhāng Yǔcái 張與材 — recorded in Gōng Kāi’s 龔開 preface to Mǎ’s collection. Documented alongside fellow Daoist priest Wáng Zǐyóu 王子繇 in the same imperial event.
Sòng-loyalist identity. Identified by the Sìkù editors via the Shùhuái poem in his collection as “Sòngmò yílǎo jìtuō huángguān” — a Sòng-end surviving-elder who entrusted himself in the Daoist headdress; his “háoyì jùnmài zhī qì” (great-and-unrestrained transcendent-spirit) demonstrates Daoist retreat as Sòng-loyalist yímín statement, not merely as religious-formal posture.
Literary network. Exchange-friendship and preface-relationship with:
- Qiú Yuǎn 仇遠 (1247–1327) — composed the principal preface attesting to Mǎ’s qīngxū (clear-emptiness) retreat
- Bái Tǐng 白珽 (1248–1328)
- Gōng Kāi 龔開 (1222–1304) — major Sòng-loyalist Daoist; composed the Dà-dé-era imperial-Daoist event preface
Poetic style. Sìkù editors evaluate as shéngǔ xiùqiān (spirit-bone elegant-tall), fēnglì qiúshàng (style-strength firm-rising), with lángláng jīnshí zhī yīn (clarion-bright metallic-and-mineral sound).
Transmission. The Máo Jìn 毛晉 print of the Xiáwài shījí placed Mǎ after Zhāng Yǔ (Bóyǔ 伯雨); the Sìkù editors correct this — all extant prefaces are Dà-dé-era (1297+), placing Mǎ as Zhāng Yǔ’s elder.
