Mid-Míng official and the leading Jiā-jìng-era pre-Táng poetry anthologist. CBDB id 123662, dates 1513–1572. Zì Rǔyán 汝言; hào Shǎozhōu 少洲. Native of Línqú 臨朐 (Shāndōng) — the same lineage as the later Féng Qí 馮琦 (1558–1603). Jìnshì of Jiājìng wùxū (1538). Served in many regional posts including Hézhōng shǒu (prefect of Hézhōngfǔ — the position during which he began the Gǔshī jì compilation in 1544). Rose ultimately to Guānglùsì qīng (Minister of the Court of Imperial Entertainments).
His monumental work is the KR4h0107 Gǔshī jì 古詩紀 (156 juǎn), the definitive late-imperial repository of pre-Táng Chinese poetry, compiled over 14 years (1544–1557) and published in stages. The work covers all pre-Táng verse from gǔyì (pre-canonical lost poetry) through ChénSuí; subsequent anthologies (Zāng Màoxún, Zhāng Zhīxiàng, 梅鼎祚 Méi Dǐngzuò) and modern editions (Lù Qīnlì 1983) take it as their starting-point. He also published separately the Fēngyǎ guǎngyì 風雅廣逸 (10 juǎn, the gǔyì portion separately) earlier in his career.
His textual blunders — flagged by Féng Shū (馮舒, 1593–1649) in KR4h0108 Shījì kuāngmiù — are real but do not affect the work’s primary position as the principal source.
