Féng Jiàn 馮鑑

Féng Jiàn 馮鑑 (fl. Five Dynasties period, ca. 900–960), sobriquet 炙轂子 (Zhìgǔ zǐ). The attribution of the Xù shì shǐ 續事始 (KR3k0077) to this person rests on internal evidence: the text repeatedly uses the formula “鑑按” — “Jiàn examines” — in which the character 鑑 corresponds to the author’s personal name, implying first-person authorial commentary. The sobriquet 炙轂子 is associated in bibliographic tradition with a Five Dynasties bǐ jì 筆記 compiled under that title, traditionally attributed to Féng Jiàn, though the identification is not universally secure.

Some bibliographic sources record a Xù shì shǐ attributed to 馬鑑 (Mǎ Jiàn) of the Former Shǔ 前蜀 (d. ca. 960), rather than 馮鑑; whether these are different works sharing a title, or a confusion of surnames (馮 vs. 馬) in the transmission, has not been resolved. CBDB lists multiple individuals named 馮鑑 (ids 253871, 288906, 299367, 509782, 677764), none with reliable dates, reflecting the difficulty of identifying minor Five Dynasties literati.
