Early Northern Sòng art historian and minor literatus active at Chéngdū 成都; zì Guīběn 歸本. Lǐ Tián 李畋’s preface to the Yìzhōu mínghuà lù describes him as “Mister Huáng of Jiāngxià 江夏,” but the Sìkù editors note that the “Jiāngxià” placement appears only on later editions and may be a guess on the basis of Lǐ Tián’s preface; Chén Zhènsūn’s Shūlù jiětí assumed him a Shǔ man on the strength of his familiarity with local affairs. Author of KR3h0016 Yìzhōu mínghuà lù 益州名畫錄 (1006), the foundational record of Chéngdū painting and the work that established the yìpǐn 逸品 as the supreme grade in Chinese painting taxonomy. Also author of the Máotíng kèhuà 茅亭客話, a bǐjì on Shǔ affairs.
