Liǎogēn 了根 (Qīng, fl. mid–late 18th c.)

A Qīng Pure Land monk of Juéhǎisì 覺海寺 in Xiùshuǐ 秀水 (Jiāxīng 嘉興 prefecture, Zhèjiāng), known principally for his Ēmítuó jīng zhíjiě zhèngxíng 阿彌陀經直解正行 KR6p0029 (X22n0434), a brief commentary-with-practice-manual on the Smaller Sukhāvatīvyūma. The colophon identifies him as 後學秀水覺海寺沙門了根纂註, with co-collators Dázhì 達智 and Dáchún 達純* (his pupils, fǎsì 法嗣) and the Confucian-trained lay-Buddhists Dáběn Líng jūshì 達本凌居士 and Dáqīng Chén jūshì 達清陳居士. Lifedates not preserved.

His zhíjiě genre indicates a popularising rather than scholastic register: the work serves the late-Qīng devotional movement of cúnzhèngxíng 存正行 (“preserving the correct practice”). Otherwise undocumented in standard biographical literature; he should not be confused with the Yuán Pure Land master Liǎogēn 了根 of Sìmíng 四明.
