Yuán 元 (Bǎichī Yuán 百癡元)

Early-Qīng LínjìYángqí Chán master, 32nd-generation Línjì (行-generation character per Yán dàcān’s preface reading), principal Fèi-yǐn-line master after Yǐnyuán Lóngqí’s 1654 Japan emigration. Fǎhuì 法諱 Yuán 元 (an unusual single-character dharma-name in the Mìyún line; some sources may list his full form as Xíngyuán 行元, though the juan-head signature consistently reads just 元). Hào Bǎichī 百癡 (“Hundred-Fool”, from his 建寧百山景星禪院 seat). Lay surname Cài 蔡, of Zhāngzhōu Zhāngpǔxiàn 漳州漳浦縣 (Fújiàn). Father Cài Cóngchéng ( Zǐhǎi 紫海), mother Zhèngshì 鄭氏. Born c. 1614 (age 24 in 1637 per his own xíngshí); death-date not precisely recovered but presumably c. 1660 (the yǔlù was cut 1659–61 in circumstances suggesting Bǎichī’s declining health).

Formation (1633–38). Early Confucian study; failed exams at 20. Guǐyǒu 5月 癸酉 (= 1633 lunar 5): fled home, met Zhēnjièshī 真戒師 and Niànguǒwēng 念果翁 during a thunderstorm; tonsured at Chángtài Shíshīyán 長泰石獅巖. Then to Quánzhōu Bàoqīnsì 泉州報親寺 under Gènxìn guānzhǔ 亙信關主 for initial Chán training on the “wànfǎ guīyī 萬法歸一” gōngàn. 甲戌春 (= 1634 spring): traveled to Fúzhōu Huángbòshān to meet his 本師 Fèiyǐn Tōngróng 費隱通容 (1593–1661) at age 24. Sealed on Fèiyǐn’s “dòngxián biéqǔ 動絃別曲” exchange with decisive breakthrough in 1634–35 winter rùshì. 戊寅 7月 (1638): appointed 西堂 西堂 at Hǎiyán Jīnsùshān Guǎnghuìsì when Fèiyǐn took that abbacy.

Thirteen abbacies (1641–c. 1660). Preserved juan-structure of KR6q0421 lists thirteen successive seats, among which the most significant are (a) Jiànníng Bǎishān Jǐngxīng Chányuàn (the hào-giving seat, from 1642); (b) Hǎiyán Jīnsùshān Guǎnghuìsì (戊子閏 4月 = 1648 intercalary 4, entered as abbot succeeding Fèiyǐn at the Mìyún ancestral seat — five-year tenure to 1653 is the central abbacy of his career, covered in juan 4–8 of the yǔlù); (c) Sōngjiāng Míngfā Chányuàn (甲午5月 = 1654 onwards, with multiple returns), and (d) the final Fújiàn Xìnghuà Liánshān Guóhuān Chóngfú Chánsì 興化蓮山國懽崇福禪寺. See KR6q0421 Abstract for the full abbacy-sequence with dates.

Historical significance. Bǎichī is the acting institutional successor to Fèiyǐn Tōngróng at the Mìyún ancestral Jīnsù seat — 1648 entry at Jīnsù restores the institutional continuity that had been disrupted by Fèiyǐn’s departure to Huángbò and by the 1644 Míng collapse. Among Fèiyǐn’s named dharma-heirs he ranks second after Yǐnyuán Lóngqí (who emigrated to Japan in 1654), making Bǎichī the de facto leader of the Fèiyǐn branch after the 1654 emigration. His own dharma-heirs include Hānpú Xìngcōng 憨璞性聰 (1611–1684), summoned to the Shùnzhì palace in 1657 and given the 明覺禪師 明覺禪師 title — the first Shùn-zhì-era palace-Chán master (preceding Mùchén Dàomǐn’s 1659 audience).
