Mid- to late-Táng Buddhist translator-monk of Kucha origin 龜茲國 (Qū-zī, modern Kuqa, Xīnjiāng). Sanskrit name (transliterated) 地戰濕羅 (Dì-zhàn-shī-luó — possibly Jitavasāra or similar; the reconstruction is uncertain). Alternate Chinese name Zhēn-yuè 真月 (“True-Moon”). Lifedates unrecorded. Active as collaborator (děng-yì 等譯) on the Prajñā 般若 translation team that produced the 般若 + 利言 et al. Heart Sūtra translation Bān-ruò bō-luó-mì-duō xīn-jīng (KR6c0130, T8 no. 253) — a Late-Táng (Zhēn-yuán-era, c. 790s) translation that includes the prajñā-pāramitā mantra (jiē-dì jiē-dì, bō-luó-jiē-dì, bō-luó-sēng-jiē-dì, pú-tí sà-pó-hē) explicitly within the canonical text, marking it as one of the mantra-included Heart Sūtra recensions. Lì-yán was the principal Chinese-language collaborator of the Indian translator Prajñā 般若 (Bō-rě, fl. c. 781–810), supplying linguistic competence in Chinese for Prajñā’s Sanskrit-original-based translations.
