Liú Zōngzhōu 劉宗周 (1578–1645), zì Qǐdōng 起東, hào Niàntái 念臺 / Jíshān 蕺山 (often Jíshān xiānsheng 蕺山先生), posthumously Zhōngjiè 忠介 (Qing) and Zhōngduān 忠端 (early-Qing local), was a major Late-Míng Lǐxué figure and the founder of the Jíshān xuépài 蕺山學派. Native of Shānyīn 山陰 (Shàoxīng region, Zhèjiāng). Jìnshì of Wànlì xīnchǒu (1601); held Yùshǐ and other posts under late Wànlì and Tiānqǐ; out of office for much of Chóngzhēn; rose at the start of the Hóngguāng régime to Yòu dūyùshǐ. After the fall of Nánjīng to the Qīng (1645), he refused to take Qīng office; starved himself to death over 23 days in Hóngguāng 1 / 6th month at age 68. Founded the Zhèngrén shūyuàn 證人書院 (later Jíshān shūyuàn) which produced the next generation of Late-Míng Lǐxué: his disciples include Huáng Zōngxī 黃宗羲, Chén Què 陳確, Zhāng Lǚxiáng 張履祥, Wú Pèngshān, and others. Liú is foundational in the Lǐxué / xīnxué synthesis tradition: his shèn dú (cautious in solitude) doctrine bridges the Yáojiāng liáng zhī and the ZhūSòng qióng lǐ; his student Huáng Zōngxī’s Míngrú xué àn makes him the culminating figure of Mid-Míng Lǐxué.
