Gōngdézhí 功德直 (DILA Authority A002056; Sanskrit reconstruction Guṇaśāla? — uncertain; the Chinese name semantically renders something like “the Direct One in Merit”; fl. mid-fifth century) was a Liú-Sòng-period 劉宋 Indian monk and translator. The catalog meta of KR6h0023 truncates his name to 功德; the canonical signature in the Taishō print of the Pú-sà niàn-fó sān-mèi jīng (T0414) reads “宋天竺三藏功德直譯” — “translated by Gōng-dé-zhí, Tripiṭaka-master from India, in the [Liú-]Sòng” — which is the standard form. The biographical sources are the Chū sānzàng jì jí 出三藏記集 (T2145, j. 14) and the Gāosēng zhuàn 高僧傳 (T2059, 343c–344a).
Gōngdézhí arrived in southern China around the start of the Yuánjiā 元嘉 era; he is recorded as having translated [[KR6h0023|the Púsà niànfó sānmèi jīng 菩薩念佛三昧經]] (T0414) and the Wúliàngmén pòmó tuóluóní jīng 無量門破魔陀羅尼經 (T1014) at Yángzhōu 揚州 (i.e., Jiànkāng) around Dàmíng 大明 6 (462), in collaboration with the Chinese monk 玄暢 Xuánchàng who served as the brush-holder. He is otherwise undocumented; like many fifth-century Indic translators his arrival, term of activity, and departure / death are recorded only in the briefest catalogue notations.
